On September 17, 2024, at approximately 9:34 a.m., the California Highway Patrol received a call regarding a semi collision involving a smaller vehicle. The accident occurred on South Bagley Avenue, just off the Golden State Highway southeast of Fresno. The incident involved a white 2019 Ford F-150 and a white Freightliner from Mid-California. The accident did not obstruct the roadway,  and the injury report has not yet been released. The CHP is currently investigating the cause of the collision.

How a Semi Collision Involving a Smaller Vehicle Causes Injuries

In a semi collision involving a smaller vehicle, the difference in mass and size between the two plays a significant role in the impact forces exerted. The immense weight of a semi-truck means it carries greater momentum, even at lower speeds, compared to a smaller vehicle. During a collision, this momentum is transferred to the smaller vehicle, often leading to severe damage and causing the occupants to experience high levels of force.

The disparity in size amplifies these effects, as the smaller vehicle is likely to bear the brunt of the impact, resulting in a rapid deceleration that can cause injuries such as whiplash, fractures, or head trauma. Additionally, the height and structure of a semi-truck can lead to underride accidents, where the smaller vehicle slides under the truck’s trailer, intensifying the collision’s destructive potential.

Injuries Caused by a Semi Collision With a Smaller Vehicle

Injuries resulting from a semi collision involving a smaller vehicle can vary widely, but some are particularly common and noteworthy.

  • Whiplash is a frequent injury in these types of collisions, arising when the neck and head are abruptly thrust forward and then snapped back. This rapid motion can cause soft tissue damage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion.
  • Fractures are another common outcome, often involving the ribs, limbs, or collarbone, due to the significant force applied during impact.
  • Brain and head injuries are a potential consequence of head trauma, ranging from concussions to severe brain trauma.
  • Spinal cord injuries can occur when the spine is subjected to high-impact forces, potentially resulting in nerve damage or paralysis.
  • Internal injuries, such as those to organs like the liver or spleen, may occur due to blunt force trauma, posing serious medical concerns and requiring immediate attention.
