Cottonwood, CA – I-5 crash kills 2 teens and 1 woman in Cottonwood
COTTONWOOD, CA – According to the California Highway Patrol, two teenagers and a young woman were killed in a car accident on Interstate 5 in Cottonwood early Sunday morning. An additional young woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The crash occurred around 1:45 a.m. on Sunday morning, south of the Cottonwood truck scales and south of Bowman Road on southbound I-5.
On the shoulder of the freeway, a white 2018 Kia 4-door vehicle hit a commercial truck parked on its back. A 16-year-old Red Bluff boy, the driver of the Kia, died at the scene.
A 15-year-old girl from Red Bluff and a 20-year-old woman from Cottonwood also lost their lives in the crash. Another passenger in the right-back seat, a 21-year-old woman from Red Bluff, survived the crash, but she suffered serious injuries. The woman was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding.
The teens in the front seats of the car wore seatbelts. According to police, the two young women in the back of the Kia weren’t buckled up. There is no immediate word on what caused the accident or whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Elk Grove resident Rodney Hill, 47, who drove the commercial truck, did not suffer any injuries. The truck driver did not witness the accident. The driver told officers at the scene that all he felt was the impact with the back of the truck.
The names of the individuals involved have yet to be released.
