Wildomar, CA – Pedestrian leaps in front of oncoming big rig on I-15 in Wildomar
WILDOMAR, California (January 3, 2021) – A man died after leaping in front of a tractor-trailer big rig on Monday, Jan. 3. Initial reports from the scene indicated the initial vehicle versus pedestrian collision may have caused a second accident, after another big rig collided with the first semi-truck after the first driver tried to avoid striking the pedestrian.
On the northbound I-15, just south of Baxter Road/Wildomar Trail in Wildomar, a fatal collision left the victim’s lifeless body in the lanes of travel and caused a traffic nightmare for area residents.
Cal Fire – Riverside and the California Highway Patrol were alerted to the deadly collision shortly before 11 a.m. Multiple people called 911 to report the multi-vehicle collision.
According to the CHP incident log, several vehicles pulled over at the scene, with multiple people attempting to assist the pedestrian who was mortally injured.
Over a dozen big rigs and other vehicles were stopped along the roadway and just off the highway when officials arrived. The body of the deceased victim, which was partially within the slow lane of the freeway, was also found surrounded by a small crowd of citizens.
Paramedics confirmed the victim, described as a male wearing a red shirt and a black jacket, was already deceased due to his injuries when they arrived at the scene.
Officers also interviewed the driver of a cement hauler whom early reports from the scene suggested may have crashed into the back end of the first semi after its driver slammed on his brakes while trying to avoid the pedestrian.
Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office responded around noon to the scene and requested a hard closure of the freeway, with Cal Trans arriving at the site to assist in the closure and cleanup.
In the aftermath of the accident, the freeway was backed up for many miles, with residents reporting significant travel delays.
