Car Accident FYI’s
What Car Accidents Cause the Worst Injuries?
Any car accident, even a minor fender-bender, can result in injuries. It is important to remember that if you are injured in a traffic-related accident, you need to seek medical care. Even if you do not believe that you are seriously injured, it is always best to be seen by a physician as soon as possible after the collision. Some injuries may not immediately cause symptoms and aches and pains could be an indication of a more severe injury. Therefore, we strongly urge all accident victims to see a doctor for their health and well-being, in addition to protecting their right to recover money for their damages from the at-fault driver.
Are Some Types of Accidents Worse Than Other Accidents?
All accidents are dangerous; however, some collisions are more prone to cause serious injuries.
Head-On Collisions
Head-on collisions can be very dangerous because these types of collision usually involve excessive speed. These types of crashes often cause passengers in the front seats to be crushed or thrown from the vehicle. In a head-on collision, you can suffer a variety of injuries including:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
- Abdominal injuries
- Neck and shoulder injuries
- Spinal cord and back injuries
- Chest injuries
- Broken facial bones and lacerations to the face
- Foot, leg, and ankle injuries
Side-Impact Collisions
Side-impact crashes, also known as broadside or T-bone collisions, can be some of the most dangerous crashes because there is nothing between the passenger and the other vehicle but the door. Vehicles equipped with side airbags can provide additional protection for occupants, but even side airbags cannot prevent all injuries in a side-impact collision.
Because the point of impact does not offer a crumple zone, such as the trunk of a vehicle or the hood of a vehicle, injuries in side-impact crashes may include:
- Head and brain injuries, including TBIs and concussions
- Herniated discs
- Dislocated limbs
- Spinal cord injuries, including paralysis and nerve damage
- Broken bones and fractures
- Lacerations and cuts from broken glass
Rear-End Collisions
Rear-end collisions are also referred to as “fender-benders.” However, this name can be very misleading because it can be interpreted as being “minor” when some rear-end collisions cause severe injuries. Of course, when a rear-end crash occurs at a high rate of speed, the injuries can be more severe than a low-speed collision. However, even a low-speed collision can result in injuries that cause persistent pain that may limit a person’s ability to work or perform daily activities.
Some injuries that are common in rear-end crashes include:
- Whiplash
- Spinal cord injuries
- Back injuries
- Shoulder and neck injuries
- Leg, foot, and ankle injuries
- Head injuries
Never ignore pain after a rear-end collision or any crash. Pain could indicate a serious injury. You need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
