New Year’s Safety Resolutions to Keep Fresno Drivers Safe in 2017

Torem & Associates

As we say goodbye to 2016, it is a good time to make resolutions that will keep you and your family safe on the roads in 2017. We spend a lot of time in our vehicles each year. Why not resolve to make the time you spend in your vehicle as safe as possible. You cannot force other drivers to be safe, but you can resolve to do whatever you can to prevent an accident in 2017.

Seven Resolutions to Prevent Car Accidents in 2017

Resolution Number One: I Resolve to Always Use My Seatbelt

Wearing a seatbelt is one of the easiest ways to decrease the risk of serious injury in a motor vehicle accident. Each time you get into your car, make sure you buckle up. Also, make sure every passenger in your vehicle is wearing a seatbelt and children are in car seats or booster seats appropriate for their age, weight, and height.

Resolution Number Two: Decrease Distractions While Driving

Distracted driving has become one of the most common reasons for car accidents. Resolve to put down your cell phone in 2017 and limit the use of hands-free devices when driving. Save eating, grooming, reading, writing, and other activities for when you are not driving. Anything that takes your attention away from driving has the potential to be a deadly distraction.

Resolution Number Three: Watch for Bicyclists and Pedestrians

More people are riding bicycles and walking for their health and to save money on transportation costs. Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists as you drive in 2017, especially at intersections, schools, crosswalks, parks, and playgrounds.

Resolution Number Four: Never Drink and Drive

Drunk drivers kill and injure thousands of people each year. If you plan to drink, give up your keys. Designated a sober driver, take a cab, call a friend, or stay overnight. You need to be aware of how prescription and over-the-counter drugs can impair your ability to drive. Read the warnings for drugs and take precautions to avoid a car accident.

Resolution Number Five: Avoid Drowsy and Fatigued Driving

The average adult needs seven to eight hours of sleep each night to avoid fatigued and drowsy driving. Anything less than six hours of sleep can impair your ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. Resolve to get enough sleep and rest in 2017 to keep you safe when driving.

Resolution Number Six: Slow Down

Speed is a common factor in motor vehicle accidents. In addition to reducing your ability to take evasive action to avoid an accident, higher speeds increase your risk of death or traumatic injury in a car accident. Obey the speed limit and slow down when the weather or other conditions make it dangerous to drive at the posted speed limit.

Resolution Number Seven: Maintain Your Vehicle

Performing regular car maintenance is essential for optimal control of your vehicle. Check tire pressure, windshield wipers, fluid levels, and lights on a regular basis. Change tires and brakes when they begin to show wear and tear.
