Report Shows Traffic Accident Fatalities Increase in 2016
A recent report by the National Safety Council reveals a startling trend on U.S. roads. After analyzing motor vehicle accidents for the first six months of 2016, researchers found that motor vehicle deaths increased by nine percent compared to the first six months of 2015. Even more alarming is that the rate of motor vehicle deaths 18 percent higher compared to the same six months in 2014.
Motor Vehicle Accidents
In the first six months of 2016, motor vehicle accidents cost Americans approximately $205 billion. Approximately 2.2 million people were seriously injured and 382 people died in the first half of the year. This upward trend in motor vehicle accidents began in 2014 and shows no signs of slowing.
California had the fourth highest rate of increase (31 percent) with Florida having the worse rate at 43 percent. Deborah A.P. Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council said, “One hundred deaths every day should outrage us. Americans should demand change to prioritize safety actions and protect ourselves from one of the leading causes of preventable death.” Factors that contribute to this increase in traffic accidents include lower unemployment rates, a better economy, and lower gas prices.
The NSC offers the following recommendations for drivers to help decrease the risk of being injured in a traffic accident:
- Use seat belts on every trip — ensure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up and that infants and children are restrained in approved car seats
- Never drive after drinking — have a designated driver or use an alternate means of transportation
- When driving for long periods, get plenty of rest before leaving and take regular breaks
- Avoid distractions while driving, especially texting and driving, talking on your cell phone, and using other electronic devices
- Continue to monitor your teen’s driving skills — teen drivers need continued reminders to help them develop safe driving habits
- Make sure you understand your vehicle’s safety systems and how to use them
What Should I Do If I Am Injured In A Fresno Car Accident?
Call 911 to request emergency assistance. If anyone involved in the traffic accident is injured, ask the operator to send emergency medical services. Remain as calm and move to a safe location, if possible, while you wait for police and emergency medical services.
If you are physically able to do so and it does not place you in any danger, take photographs of the accident scene, including pictures of all vehicles involved in the collision. Get as much information about the other driver (name, insurance company, etc.) and the names and contact information for any eyewitnesses.
After you take care of your medical needs, contact a Fresno car accident attorney. The insurance adjuster may pressure you to make a statement or sign a medical release; however, the insurance adjuster is not working for you. You need someone on your side who understands California personal injury laws and who will work to protect your best interest.
