Spill on Highway 99 Leads to Fresno Multiple-Vehicle Crash

A spill along Highway 99 on June 21 that involved pipes led to a Fresno multiple-vehicle crash, according to the California Highway Patrol. A massive traffic jam was the result. The collision happened south of the interchange for Highway 180. The traffic incident report stated that a Ford F-250 hauling pipes in a flatbed trailer was involved in some type of incident, causing them to spill onto the roadway.

Big Rigs Involved in Spilled Cargo Incident in Fresno Multiple-Vehicle Crash

The spill caused a Peterbilt going south along Highway 99 to pass up an embankment. In addition, the pipes were struck by a Freightliner, which experienced a diesel fuel spill on the highway because of the Fresno multiple-vehicle crash. Officers with the CHP were able to contain the diesel spill before it went into a nearby water drain. The Fresno Fire Department sent out their HAZMAT team to help with the cleanup. Four additional vehicles also struck the pipes. Injuries occurred in the accident, but none were serious.

How Semis Are Affected by a Spill or Lost Load on a Highway

Lost loads in a Fresno multiple-vehicle crash create immediate physical obstacles on the roadway, increasing the likelihood of collisions and accidents, especially for semi-trucks that require longer stopping distances due to their size and weight. These incidents can result in substantial financial costs due to damaged goods, vehicle repairs, and potential legal liability. In addition, when a big rig driver loses control, it increases the risk of a rollover or jackknife accident, adversely affecting other nearby vehicles.

Lost Loads on Semis Cause Many Accidents Every Year

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), there are thousands of accidents involving commercial vehicles yearly, with a significant portion stemming from lost loads. Statistics reveal that approximately 7% of truck accidents can be attributed to cargo shifting or falling from the vehicle. Furthermore, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that road debris, including spilled or lost loads, contributes to over 25,000 crashes annually, leading to nearly 100 fatalities and thousands of injuries. These statistics underscore the critical importance of securing cargo properly to prevent such hazardous incidents.

Contacting an Injury Lawyer When a Big Rig Causes Your Accident Injuries

It is crucial to seek the assistance of an experienced injury lawyer who specializes in truck accidents to navigate this difficult time effectively. An injury lawyer can help you understand your rights, gather necessary evidence, and build a strong case to secure fair compensation. They will work to establish liability, often investigating the trucking company’s maintenance records, the driver’s credentials, and any potential violations of federal regulations.
