Merced, CA – A pedestrian was killed in a collision with a police vehicle
MERCED, CA – Merced Police Department reports that a Merced police officer struck a woman on Thursday night, killing her. It happened at 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of G St. and 15th St. An investigation is now underway by the California Highway Patrol. The woman was walking in the roadway as the patrol car was driving south on G Street in the 1400 block. “This is an extremely tragic scenario. Our condolences go out to all those involved,” said Lt. Daniel Dabney of Merced Police Department. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
This entire incident was captured on surveillance cameras at Lee’s Food Market across the street. The video shows someone falling to the ground after the patrol car passes through. The store clerk said there are a lot of homeless people who travel back and forth, and there is not enough lighting at this intersection.
The victim has not been identified by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office yet. Officer Chase Wilson was the driver, according to Lieutenant Dabney. He has been with the police department for five years and is currently on paid administrative leave. As part of the administrative investigation, Dabney said the city will look for policy violations.
The intersection of G St. and 15th St. does not have crosswalks. In response to the question of how officers operate patrol computers while driving, Lt. Dabney says, “There is definitely training involved with the officers in multitasking.”
