BAKERSFIELD, CA (February 27, 2022) – In the early morning hours of Friday, two people were killed in a crash south of Bakersfield. Just after 4 a.m., a semi-truck and black sedan collided near Herring and Old River Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to Kelly Walker, a sergeant for CHP Buttonwillow, the black sedan was traveling westbound on Herring Road, and the semi-truck was traveling southbound on Old River Road. The intersection at Herring and Old River Road is a T intersection, and a stop sign is in place for those traveling east and west on Herring Road. It is a free-flowing road.

According to CHP, the black sedan went through the stop sign in the path of the semi-truck and was struck. Three people were inside the sedan when it overturned on the shoulder of the freeway.

At least two occupants of the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. Major injuries were sustained by the third occupant, who was taken to a local hospital. There were no injuries to the semi-truck driver.

An investigation is still underway.

Tractor-Trailer Accidents in Bakersfield

Almost 3,000 victims are injured or killed in tractor-trailer accidents across Southern California every year. Commercial vehicles can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, meaning they have the potential to cause catastrophic injuries to those involved in collisions. This is particularly true when victims are traveling in smaller vehicles.

Although most commercial vehicle accidents are preventable, they continue to have negative consequences for drivers sharing the road. Commercial vehicles are far larger than other vehicles, which raises the odds of them causing severe injuries to the occupants of another vehicle.

In many cases, victims sustain traumatic injuries that require hospitalization, therapy, and various types of medical treatment both immediately and long-term.
