Modesto, CA – Police seek the driver of a hit-and-run that killed a dirt bike rider in west Modesto
MODESTO, CA (February 16, 2022) – A driver who fled the scene of a fatal collision in west Modesto Wednesday evening is being sought by authorities. The accident occurred about 7:39 p.m. near Paradise Road and Vernon Avenue, killing a 34-year-old Modesto man who was riding a Honda dirt bike, according to the California Highway Patrol. His name will be withheld until the family is notified. He was traveling north on Vernon, approaching Paradise. The intersection of Vernon and Paradise has stop signs. Traffic on Paradise has right-of-way.
According to the CHP, the motorcyclist entered the intersection directly into the path of an eastbound vehicle. The motorcycle struck the right side of the unknown vehicle with its front. The rider, who did not wear a helmet, died at the scene. The driver fled in a vehicle that is said to have “substantial” right-side damage, according to the CHP.
CHP investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. According to officer Tom Olsen, investigators have not yet identified the make, model, or color of the vehicle whose driver is being sought for questioning.
