CERRITOS, CA (February 17, 2022) – The 605 Freeway in Cerritos was closed early Friday morning following a head-on collision caused by a wrong-way driver.

The accident happened at 2:18 a.m. close to South Street on the southbound 605 Freeway. California Highway Patrol reports that a red Hyundai Elantra was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes when it stopped on the shoulder of the southbound side and made a U-turn.

The Hyundai then collided head-on with another vehicle traveling the right way. The two vehicles immediately caught fire. According to CHP, a Good Samaritan pulled a woman from one of the cars and began CPR on her, but she died at the scene.

Authorities identified her as Alyssa Aragon-Ramirez, 26, of El Monte on Saturday. In addition, the driver of the second car was also killed on the scene. His identity has not yet been revealed. Neither car had a passenger.

The Good Samaritans who witnessed the vehicles fully engulfed got out and attempted to rescue both parties, but only one of them was able to be extricated,” CHP Officer Marcos Iniguez said.

The authorities are trying to determine why the driver of the Hyundai made a U-turn on the freeway.
