Fresno Gets a New Splash Park

Torem & Associates

ABC30 News reported on the new splash park that was opened in Fresno at the beginning of July. Vinland Park is the sixth splash park in Fresno. The park is just in time to keep kids cool and happy when the daily temperatures in Fresno soar into the 90s.

Splash parks have become popular in cities throughout the country to provide a fun, safe place for kids to play and keep cool during hot summer months. However, parents need to take precautions to ensure children are not injured at splash parks. Even though the parks are not swimming facilities, children can still be injured from slips and falls, colliding with other children, or sunburns.

Splash Pad Safety Tips for Parents

During the hot days of summer, kids and parents love anything that can provide a few hours of fun and relief from the heat. Splash pads or splash parks are a great answer to what to do on a hot day; however, you need to take steps to make sure that the day ends the same way it begins — safe and happy.

  • Review the rules for the splash park. Each park should have a set of rules posted for everyone. Go over the rules with your children to ensure they understand what they can and cannot do while playing in the water.
  • Ask around for recommendations for the best splash pad. There are several throughout Fresno, and you may find that some parks are better than others for location, amenities, and crowds.
  • Just because you are not getting into a pool does not mean your toddler does not need swim diapers. Kids get just as wet playing in the splash park as they do at the pool. Dress your children appropriately to encourage good sanitary habits. Also, remind your child not to wait to “go” — encourage older children to take frequent bathroom breaks to prevent “accidents.”
  • Pack plenty of water and snacks. Both you and your child need to stay hydrated in the sun, even when playing in cool Bring healthy, high-protein snacks for a quick re-fuel mid-way through playtime. If you will be at the park for several hours around lunchtime, consider packing a picnic lunch. It is a great way to spend time with your children “unplugged” from technology.
  • Bring the sunscreen and use it liberally. Children and adults can burn quickly in the bright sun at splash parks. Make sure you apply sunscreen before getting in the water and reapply according to the directions for maximum protection.
  • If there is a wading pool, make sure to bring flotation devices. Even waist-deep water can be a drowning hazard for small children.
  • Wearing water shoes can help prevent slips and falls. Water shoes can also help prevent scrapes from the pavement and prevent feet from coming into contact with harmful bacteria in public restrooms.
  • Watch for signs of heat-related illnesses. Take immediate action if you see any of the signs of heat stroke, cramps, or exhaustion.
