Would You Want Your Teen To Wear Drunk Goggles?

Torem & Associates

No, these beer goggles are not a prank, and they are not funny — they are very, very serious and they could save your teenager’s life. Drunk driving and underage drinking are serious problems in the Central California Valley area and throughout the United States.

Despite the numerous PSAs and educational courses aimed at teaching teenagers about the dangers of drinking and driving, too many teens are injured or killed in drunk driving accidents each year in this country. Jeff Rossen of the Today Show demonstrated a tool being used by one company to make the dangers of drunk driving more “real” for teenagers in some cities.

Ford Driving Skills

Ford Motor Company has developed a campaign aimed at helping teenagers learn to be safer drivers. Ford Driving Skills for Life was established by the Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts in 2003. The program offers a variety of resources, including web-based curriculum and hands-on training, to help parents and teachers train teenagers to become safe, responsible drivers.

Each year, thousands of people killed or injured in drunk driving crashes in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A recent example is the drunk driving accident during a Mardi Gras parade that injured 28 people in New Orleans. To help teens learn how alcohol can impair their ability to operate a motor vehicle safely, the experts and engineers at Ford have developed a “drunk suit” that includes drunk goggles to mimic the effects of alcohol. To illustrate the effectiveness of the drunk suit, Jeff Rossen agreed to try it out. You can see the disastrous results in this video from the Today Show.

As you can see in the video, after putting on the drunk suit and drunk goggles, Jeff miserably fails the roadside sobriety test and the driving test. It is apparent from the results that the effects of alcohol on driving abilities can be potentially dangerous for the driver and anyone else on the road.

Who is Responsible for Damages in a Drunk Driving Accident?

When a drunk driver causes an accident, the victim suffers more than physical and emotional damages. Economic damages from a DUI accident can be substantial. Victims often require hospitalizations, surgeries, and physical therapy to recover from their injuries. During their recovery, victims may be unable to work. The medical bills and lost wages in a DUI accident case can quickly add into the tens of thousands of dollars. In some cases, the damages in a drunk driving accident can reach into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Holding the drunk driver responsible for the crash is the first step in receiving compensation for your injuries. You must prove that the driver caused the collision that resulted in your injuries to recover compensation. Simply proving he was drunk at the time of the accident is not sufficient because a drunk driving could potentially be in an accident that he or she did not cause.

Therefore, hiring an experienced personal injury attorney with experience handling DUI accidents is in your best interest. An experienced personal injury attorney understands the elements he must prove if you are to receive compensation for your injuries, losses, and damages.
