Hit And Run Accident Kills Young Boy
CBS Los Angeles reports that a man is in custody facing charges after a young boy died from injuries in a hit and run accident last week. The hit and run accident occurred at the intersection of Towne Avenue and 82ndStreet in Florence, CA. The driver struck the 5-year old child twice before fleeing the accident scene. Surveillance video captured what appeared to be a green Suburban or Chevrolet Tahoe with front end damage.
A 19-year-old man claimed responsibility and turned himself in at the Los Angeles Police Department’s 77thStreet Station. According to the news report, a preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling at 40 mph in a 25 mph speed zone. It appears that the young boy may have run out into the road in front of his home just before being struck by the SUV.
Protecting Children from Pedestrian Accidents
We can remind children each time they go outside to be careful and stay out of the road, but children easily forget safety measures when they are playing or excited. Therefore, we should never stop educating our children about pedestrian safety. Important pedestrian safety tips you should review with your child on a routine basis include:
- Look both ways and then look again to the right and the left before crossing the street.
- Put away all distractions when walking, including books, cell phones, and other electronic devices.
- Never wear headphones when walking.
- Stay on sidewalks or paths whenever possible.
- Only cross the road at street corners. Use crosswalks and obey all traffic signals when available.
Children under 10 years of age have a difficult time understanding and judging distance. Therefore, it is always best for children under 10 to cross streets with an adult.
There are many resources available to parents to help them reinforce pedestrian safety. Below are links to websites that provide additional pedestrian safety tips, printable materials, and other resources to teach children about pedestrian safety.
