Torem & Associates

ABC30 Action News reported on a pedestrian accident that claimed the life of one person. Last week, a car struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Barstow and Flower in Clovis. According to witnesses, the vehicle was traveling south on Fowler when the incident occurred. Some witnesses told police that the pedestrian might have been crossing the against the light at the time of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the accident scene and is cooperating with police. It does not appear at this time that alcohol was a factor in this pedestrian accident.

Watch Out for Pedestrians During the Holidays

During the holiday season, we see an increase in pedestrian traffic. More people are out shopping and running errands. Just as drivers can be distracted, pedestrians can be distracted, especially during the holidays. It is easy to forget to check both ways and watch for traffic when your mind is on the next errand you need to run, your grocery list, when your in-laws are arriving, or the countless other things that you must complete before Christmas arrives.

Remember, when you are walking, you also have a responsibility to obey all traffic laws and remain alert to avoid pedestrian accidents. Avoid using your cell phone or carry packages that block your view of oncoming traffic. For more information on pedestrian safety, visit the pedestrian safety website of the California Department of Public Health.

Watch for Children!

Children will be out playing more during the holidays when school is out of session, especially after Christmas when they have new toys to enjoy. You may also see an increase in children riding bicycles after Christmas day.  As you drive through neighborhoods, remember to slow down and watch for children playing, walking, and riding bicycles. Children do not understand the dangers of running into the road to chase a ball or playing too closely to the side of the road. It is up to us to watch for children when we are driving to keep them safe. Slow down, put down the cell phone, and remain alert!

For parents, it is important to teach children the importance of pedestrian safety. You should have regular discussions with your children about the dangers of posed by motor vehicles. Some drivers will not slow down in residential areas, and other drivers refuse to avoid distractions while driving. Therefore, it is crucial that we teach our children how to protect themselves against pedestrian accidents.
