Torem & Associates

Two individuals have lost their lives in a big rig crash on August 21 in Fresno County. According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just before 1:00 a.m. at the intersection of Belmont and North Westlawn avenues in a rural area west of Fresno. Officers report that a dune buggy was traveling west on Westlawn Avenue without any lights when it collided with a semi-truck moving east on Belmont. While Belmont Avenue did not have a stop sign, Westlawn did.

Two Men Riding Dune Buggy Die in Big Rig Crash

Tragically, the two men in the dune buggy were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have noted that the dune buggy was not street-legal, and it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

A Big Rig Crash Involving a Smaller Vehicle Often Has Catastrophic Results

Big rig crashes involving smaller vehicles can often lead to devastating consequences, as the significant size and weight difference between the two can result in severe injuries or fatalities. These incidents frequently occur at intersections or on highways, where smaller vehicles may find themselves in blind spots or misjudge the speed of oncoming large trucks. The sheer mass of a big rig can exert tremendous force upon impact, often leading to catastrophic outcomes for those in smaller vehicles.

When a Trucker Is Responsible for a Fatal Accident

When a trucker is involved in a crash that results in injury or fatality, several legal implications may arise. Truck drivers can be liable for accidents if they are negligent. This negligence can occur for different reasons, including driver fatigue, failure to adhere to traffic regulations or distracted driving. In such cases, victims or their families may pursue wrongful death claims against the truck driver and potentially their employer.

Moreover, trucking companies are subject to state and federal regulations that mandate hours of service, such as proper vehicle maintenance and driver training. If a trucker is found to be violating these regulations, it may strengthen the case against them, leading to harsher penalties or increased liabilities. Additionally, insurance plays a crucial role; truckers must carry adequate liability coverage to protect against accident claims.
