Fresno Big Rig Rollover Occurs on Golden State Highway

Torem & Associates

A Fresno big rig rollover was reported on the Golden State Highway on July 18. The accident happened just south of the State Route 41 connector around 5:00 p.m. and involved a pickup pulling a utility trailer, according to the California Highway Patrol. The semi, which was the cab only, overturned onto its side.

The pickup and trailer also overturned, spilling liquids and tables on the road, and blocking three lanes. A minor injury was reported. However, information was not provided on whether that individual was transported to a hospital. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The number one and two lanes of the highway reopened around 5:25 p.m.

Why a Fresno Big Rig Rollover Happens

Big rigs, due to their size and design, are more susceptible to rollovers under certain conditions than smaller vehicles.

  • High center of gravity: Big rigs’ high center of gravity makes them inherently less stable compared to smaller vehicles. This increased height shifts the truck’s balance point higher off the ground, making it easier for it to experience a Fresno big rig rollover, especially when going around curves or during abrupt maneuvers.
  • Overloaded or unevenly loaded cargo: When cargo is overloaded or not evenly distributed, it can exacerbate a big rig’s instability. Unevenly loaded cargo shifts the vehicle’s balance point and can lead to uneven weight distribution, both of which significantly increase the likelihood of a rollover.
  • Sudden sharp turns or maneuvers: Sudden sharp turns or emergency maneuvers can cause big rigs to roll over due to centrifugal forces. The rapid change in direction can make it difficult for the vehicle to maintain stability, particularly if the load is not securely fastened or is top-heavy.
  • Poor road conditions: Poor road conditions, such as potholes, debris, or uneven surfaces, can disrupt the stability of large commercial vehicles, causing a Fresno big rig rollover. These obstacles can cause sudden jolts or shifts in the vehicle’s balance, making it harder to maintain control and increasing the risk of a rollover.
  • Driver fatigue or inexperience: Driver fatigue and inexperience are critical factors contributing to big rig rollovers. Fatigued drivers have slower reaction times and may miss important cues on the road. In contrast, inexperienced drivers might not be fully aware of the limitations and handling characteristics of a large vehicle.
