VISALIA, CA – According to the California Highway Patrol, a single Tulare County Sheriff patrol car was engaged in an accident early on Wednesday morning as a result of the winter weather (CHP).

The Fresno Communications Center was alerted to a single-car Tulare County Sheriff patrol vehicle crash on southbound State Road 99 (SR-99) south of Avenue 328 on Wednesday at 1:54 AM.

California Highway Patrol Visalia Area officers were sent to the area to conduct an investigation. According to an initial investigation, Deputy Cardenas was on duty when he was driving a patrol car for the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department northbound on SR-99, south of the Avenue 328 overpass at around 70 mph, in response to a service call in Kingsburg.

A Eucalyptus tree near the center divider unexpectedly collapsed in an easterly direction due to severe weather that included heavy rain and strong gusts.

According to police, the tree and its limbs fell to the ground leaning up against and on top of a nearby concrete k-rail. This resulted in the tree and several of its limbs hanging over the first northbound lane. Rain, hours of darkness, and the suspended position of the dark tree made it difficult to see the dark tree and its limbs.

Owing to the poor vision, Deputy Cardenas was unable to avoid the tree and its branches and struck the tree with his police car, severely damaging it. The impact caused the deputy to receive minor injuries.

During the initial collision, the car drifted to the north and struck a concrete k-rail, slightly damaging the patrol car’s left side.

According to the police, two further separate collisions involving two additional distinct automobiles were recorded at the same time.

The same tree/branch that fell caused all three collisions, and each occurrence is being looked into.
