Fresno County, CA – Identified: Women killed in Firebaugh semi-truck crash
FRESNO COUNTY, CA – Two women who died in a car accident involving a semi-truck near Firebaugh on Monday have been named by the authorities. According to representatives of the Fresno County Coroner’s Office, a collision near Russell and Shields Avenues claimed the lives of Leslie Boston, 64, of Hayward and Fatimah Rambo, 35, of Tracy.
The California Highway Patrol was called to the crossroads at around 4:35 p.m. after it was learned that an SUV and a heavy rig had collided. When police arrived, they discovered passengers Boston and Rambo stuck inside the SUV. Both women later passed away from their wounds. There are many kinds of accidents that involve tractor-trailers. One of the most lethal is an underriding accident.
Studies have determined that nearly 50% of all deadly tractor-trailer accidents are the result of either overriding or underriding.
Underride accidents occur when a standard passenger car or truck collides with an oversized commercial vehicle and the impact forces the smaller vehicle underneath the trailer. Due to the fact that an average car is about 40 inches off the ground, and the lowest portion of a truck’s trailer is about 45 inches above the ground, the cabin of a vehicle can easily slide under a trailer during an accident, compressing or even tearing the car’s roof completely off, and resulting in critical injuries or even death for those in the car.
It has been estimated that about 500 victims die annually in underride accidents and more than 5,000 are injured.
