Merced, CA – Head-on crash caused by DUI driver leaves one injured
MERCED. CA – According to police, a man was arrested after crashing head-on into a vehicle while driving under the influence. After 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol was notified of a head-on collision at Santa Fe and Olive.
When nearby units arrived, witnesses reported that a Mustang had crashed into a minivan. A man in his 40s drove the Mustang southbound on Santa Fe, while a man in his 50s drove the minivan.
Apparently, the Mustang struck the minivan head-on after driving into its path. Flames immediately engulfed the van after it overturned in the crash. The driver was rescued from the burning vehicle by a passerby who saw the crash. According to CHP, the Good Samaritan also told them that the Mustang driver was trying to escape by foot. Officers from the CHP managed to detain the driver at the scene, where he was evaluated and found to be driving under the influence.
Officers say the minivan driver suffered major injuries, but he is expected to survive. Police say the Mustang’s driver faces DUI charges, bodily injury charges, and felony hit-and-run charges.
