Bicycle Accidents in Bakersfield

The leading cause of serious and fatal bicycle accidents in Bakersfield and the surrounding areas is speeding by vehicle drivers. Speeding is one of the main types of driver negligence seen in traffic accidents throughout the state of California. Even slight increases in speed can translate into large increases to the risk of a fatal traffic accident. Speeding increases a vehicle’s collision force and stopping distance, which is very dangerous when paired with a collision of any kind.

On average, approximately five bicyclists lose their lives per year in Bakersfield alone. Other frequent causes of bike crashes include:

  • Drivers making illegal left turns or U-turns and colliding with a cyclist traveling in the opposite lane
  • Drivers speeding or ignoring traffic signals
  • Drivers not providing enough space for bicyclists to pass
  • Drivers who illegally enter bicycle lanes
  • Drivers/passengers illegally opening vehicle doors without checking to see if a bicyclist is approaching
  • Driver negligence, i.e. texting, intoxication, impairment
